What I have learned. Every mentor (more than 6) I have had uses a different writing style to write grants. All of these people have decades of funding. They all insist you must do certain things. My conclusion: maybe no one is right. They all hate this feedback.

Turns out that sometimes a complex system like the brain doesn't actually follow a simple succinct entertaining narrative. In medicine many times a simple succinct narrative resulted in serious mistakes (e.g. thalidomide). Follow the evidence.
