Almost 10 years after my first #writethedocs conference in Vilnius, I got the chance to attend again, this time (virtually) in Berlin. It's great to feel the good vibes from the community again!
Does Gerrit have any significant user base outside of Google? I can't see any advantages in Gerrit approach vs. more traditional branch-based approach.
Absolutely horrendous idea I just had: Backspace-sensitive-passwords
Emojis have no place in commit messages. Put them where they belong: variable names
If more developers ran Linux on their desktop, maybe they wouldn't be so petrified of running a server by themselves. We are unlearning the basics of the Internet at an alarming rate.
Я не понимаю, почему русскоязычные айтишники в твиттере не видят разницы между handle и handler
I never remember if it's (text)[link] or the other way around. What's your trick to remember?
In case you’re curious, “drag and drop” in French is “glisser-déposer”
I HATE THAT NOWHERE ON THE INTERNET HAS EXACT SEARCH ANYMORE. YOU CAN PUT ALL THE DOUBLE QUOTES YOU WANT AND IT STILL FUZZY MATCHES OR STRAIGHT UP DOES """SYNONYMS""". GOOGLE SUCKS NOW. EVERYTHING SUCKS ENSHITTIFICATION OF EVERYTHING.
This is surely the quote all computer science folks need on their wall.
I wonder if anybody has really implemented all these best practices, and what impact did they get betterstack.com/community/guid…
#Firefox did something nasty to the tabs again: there are no tab borders now, the thing looks less and less user-friendly. Maybe there's some secret setting I could tweak to bring back the previous user experience?
Bounty hunters, тыкающие вашу инфраструктуру с утра пораньше прямо в день публикации critical vulnerability патча, это, конечно, вселенское зло. С другой стороны, а чего вы хотели.
Switching to sending HTML over the wire instead of JSON has been eye-opening
After upgrading Gitlab runners from 16.4 to 16.6 there was only one pipeline that got broken, and I think this is big success (although I spent the whole day debugging and fixing that pipeline)
GitHub was so naïve back in the days
@odewahn quickly whipped up a README.adoc, committed it to a new repo, and pushed it to GitHub. And voila, we had a README listing all the environment variables of the GitHub server, including full db credentials, etc.
One of recent nightmares: Terraform sneaks something into plan between me running `terraform plan` and `terraform apply` and I apply the plan without noticing.
10 years ago the Google Reader app was shut down by Google. For me this app was one of the most useful and frequently used. Here’s a good article reflecting on what the app meant for the users and what has gone wrong: theverge.com/23778253/googl…
It’s funny that “Love my docs” is a slogan of shoe brand Dr. Martens, and not of some tech writers’ conference.
