As a former Public Library Director & someone who experienced a program challenge & personal attacks - my hope w/ this thread is to provide as much confidence to our library staff & trustees as the ill-informed individuals that attend our board meetings & post on our sm pages.🧵

At first you might have been thinking, “who is this weirdo who hates broccoli so much?” and it didn’t worry you. But once the ELECTED BOARD goes along with this ridiculous demand, that’s when it’s time to take notice of what these ELECTED officials are doing. #idpol

But, an appeal of this reasonable broccoli decision to the school board lets the board members decide. And against the advice of their professional staff & parents, and for no good reasons at all, they each vote to ban broccoli from all schools based on their personal opinions.

In the 1960s, there was a period where several states disaffiliated from the ALA because of the organization’s stance on race-based discrimination and segregation. The states didn’t like that ALA was pushing them to follow the law, expand public service to all regardless of race.

People you don't know want to force *your kid* to think like they do, by removing books with viewpoints these strangers do not like. They're removing books one by one, viewpoint by viewpoint, until all that is left is whatever these strangers want your kid to think.

Some guy just accosted me in the grocery store and told to@take this photo down. Maybe Dorothy moon doesn’t like people knowing she associates with a guy who scares kids while she claims to “protect” them? 🤷‍♀️

Hey look- it’s @idahogop Chair Dorothy Moon hanging out with David Pettinger, one of the people who terrorized my children. As a reminder, he’s harassed my family among many others. idahopress.com/news/local/peo… But yeah let’s worry about those librarians…

When libraries see a group in their community that could use support, they step up to help. That’s what public libraries do: they serve their communities.

I don’t think people realize how books are often luxury items for people who don’t have extra spending money A public library offers access to these books for free because long ago we decided that free access to information was a necessary public good for a functioning democracy

Books cost money. When people are struggling to pay rent and put food on the table, they don't have the money to buy books. They still need access to information. Democracy depends on access to information.
