Health & Safety Classroom Checklist We have just launched our free classroom health & safety checklist. It has guidance (incl. images) to make it easier for teachers to know what to look for. We think it will help a lot - Let us know what you think. onesourcehealthandsafety.co.uk/checklist/clas…
As thought's turn to planning school Christmas events, let's remember to properly risk assess them. We'd rather not read about another child being badly burnt because someone decided to use real candles. onesourcehealthandsafety.co.uk/school-case-la… - Child suffers severe burns at carol concert
Undertaking stress risk assessments is a legal duty. But in practice they are only effective if staff feel safe communicating about their stressors. Effective management of stress requires a truly open and supportive environment - Is your school one of those places?
This week is International Stress Awareness Week. We are helping to raise awareness, of the effects and negative impact stress can cause but also how you can manage and support individuals with stress! #StressAwarenessDay #StressAwarenessWeek
Is your school ready to deal with a Norovirus outbreak? For example do you have supplies of disposable paper towels for hand drying (and bins for used towels to be deposited in). Disinfectant sprays for cleaning multi-touch points?
We are entering Norovirus season (aka the Winter Vomiting Bug - it causes diarrhoea as well🙄) . Norovirus spreads through schools quickly. Now is a good time to reinforce good personal hygiene practices with students and staff.

Next week is International Infection Prevention Week! We are helping raise awareness, on the importance of preventing the spread of infections.
Does your site manager use petrol-powered tools such as strimmers/brush cutters/hedge trimmers/high vibration tools? If they also smoke it increases the likelihood of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) affecting their vascular system. Just another reason to quit this October.
Two children in every class have a food allergy & 1 in 5 allergic reactions happen in school. Allergy School from @NatashasLegacy is offering free resources to all nurseries & primary #schools to help upskill staff & raise awareness about food allergies – buff.ly/U7hNpLV
Today is World Mental Health Day! We are helping raise awareness, of looking after your own Mental Health but also checking in on others around you. #WorldMentalHealthDay #WMHD25 #MentalHealth
If you need to use a laptop for prolonged periods, we advise you get laptop raiser, keyboard and mouse. This will help you adopt a better posture. Set the top of the screen at eye level. This type of laptop raiser is very adjustable and folds flat when not in use.
In this image we see a classic example of laptop use. This user is going to experience both back and neck pain, if they adopt this working practice for long. Your back needs you to maintain its gentle S curve - you can help it by sitting up straight.
When using computers, laptops or tablets for prolonged periods give a thought to your eyes. Focussing on a fixed distance causes your eye's flicker rate to slow down - result: dry & itchy eyes. The ache you feel is because the eye's muscles don't like holding the same position.
The main advantage of laptops, their portability, is also a reason people suffer muscloskeletal injuries (including back pain) and work-related upper-limb disorders. We often use them without thought as to what we are doing to our health.
Just a week to go before we're at the CXA award ceremony. We are looking forward to attending! Keep up with us on our socials to find out the results!
If you sit at an angle to your desk, you will be twisting your spine. Twisting is an action your back does not really appreciate. In this photo the lady also has her mouse arm far to the right - this can lead to shoulder and neck pain. Keep your mouse close to your keyboard.
The use of technology can be major cause of backpain (and lots of other issues). As an employee of a school if you use a computer, laptop or tablet habitually (often taken to mean at least 1 hour solid every day) as part of your job, your employer must undertake a DSE Assessment.
Just carrying books (or that bag you have been meaning to sort) can put a strain on your back and shoulders. Often we don't realise the way we are carrying things is causing us to adopt less than ideal postures; then there are the obstacles like doors or unlocking the car.
If you habitually use DSE, then you will be classified as a "user" under the DSE Regs. This means that not only must your employer undertake a risk assessment but they must ensure your workstation meets minimum standards. If PPA at home is normal practice this applies there too.
