Our Small Patch

Living on our very own bit of countryside. Tend to listen more than speak.
With so much talk now on social media about farm safety and farm fatalities, yet another couple of deaths to report and families in shreds as a result #ComeHomeSafe #LensLeg
Pig food arrived today ready for weaners ‘21. Pigs arriving tomorrow early morning. This time there won’t be escapees! I don’t fancy the day running after them like last time…
Productive week for once. Tractor fixed. Potatoes dug and now the first chicken eggs out for sale by the road. Eldest is most excited to have their own eggs for sale and the prospect of pocket money! In other news eye watering fencing quote in and we officially have a flock No!
Having “one of those days”. Each job turning into another as something breaks. Fixing the broken fan belt, Dynamo bolts missing, hacksaw breaks. Now if I can fix each in reverse order we’ll be away again! Looking forward to sheep arriving to reduce the need to cut grass!
Busy jobs week. Contractor out to look at fencing to prepare for sheep. Builders starting at the house. Now to try and sort out a livestock trailer, flock number and thistles whilst keeping the day job going
Half way through topping the fields and fanbelt snaps - radiator boils. Great. Can’t wait to have something eating all that grass again. Then to improve it - lots of thistle and nettles in patches.
Nothing like local asparagus and new potatoes (ours aren’t quite ready yet) with some of our beautiful poached eggs. Champion
Looking at the countryside stewardship scheme and wondering if it’s worth it for smallholding? How on earth do you figure out what’s what? It seems so complicated!
Went to see some sheep today. Lincolnshire Longwools. Lovely breed although on the older side they may just give us one or two more lambings to be a starter flock and keep the breed going. Fingers crossed we can get everything in order!
Hypothetical Question/Survey (although no doubt it will happen as Parliament is in meltdown!) Please RT after to get a good result “If” there was a second referendum what would you vote?
That'll add to my workload , I'll have to read stories to the calves next week when schools back #Familyfarming #ProudToFarm @ifac_advice #Februdairy #TeamDairy #IWD2019
Gone to that there London today. Wearing my rather good percussion coat (it is the best coat I own). Pretty sure I’ve triggered a couple of people that have spotted the logo!
Pro tip - don’t tell me using land for animal agriculture is a waste if your profile picture is you on a golf course.

Interesting observation: when we got our horses I lost 2 stone over the following 6 months. Now they’re gone, it’s coming back. Think it must have been lifting quarter of a cart horse daily that helped - if you were willing to lift a foot, shed let you carry the leg!
