The bombing of Dresden, even if they "only" killed 25,000 civilians, is, just like the American nuclear bombings of Japan, something that many consider a war crime. The point of the Hague & Geneva Conventions is that "winning at all costs" is abhorrent.
In every war there are things that we might wish we had avoided. No one with compassion thinks that the Dresden bombings were a ‘good’ thing in WW2 either, but we had to defeat the enemy. Sometimes that’s what it’s about. Action, and resolution.
Also worth noting that the big reason that Hamas even exists in the first place is because Israel funded it in order to destabilise and counter the PLO.
