Life is short. I don’t have time to argue when I know I’m wrong.

Closing thoughts here... I mentioned the allusions to A Tale of Two Cities as being especially meaningful to me. In that novel, Sidney Carton bears such a striking resemblance to Charles Darnay that he is able to switch places with the latter man, who is bound for the…

“What do you like about ‘The Dark Knight Rises’?” The aging hero is an incredibly strong story for me. I like that Nolan delivered on his vision of Batman as a symbol that can be passed on. There were many who struggled with the notion of Bruce getting a happy ending, but for…

Why, yes. Yes, I do love The Dark Knight Rises.

Me? Oh, I’m just an indie author with some books to sell.

Thank you, @jheilesonRD. I hope you enjoy the read whenever you’re able. As for moving it up in the TBR list, I can only say I trust your judgment.

Finally got a copy of Travel By Star by @plainrunner2! Should I move this one up the TBR?!

A fair point here. The four films I listed range within a four year period (2003-2007), which would have put me at the ages of 28-32. I won't deny that was a good time in my life. My family was young, we were in the flush of those homebuilding days, and work was stable. However,…

I'm always skeptical of people whose favorite movies are from a 10 year window when life was going good for them, BUT if I had to pick 4 from that same window those are not a bad 4 to pick. And M&C is exquisite.

There is nothing currently out that interests me. Hasn't been for some time. Some may say that's because Hollywood isn't making movies for me anymore. My time has passed. Like all good lies, there's a sliver of truth buried in there, like a malicious splinter. Hollywood has been…

If you were to see a movie in the theater right now, what would you see?

Single best review I’ve ever read. “Master and Commander” sits at the top of my list of all time favorite films and remains unchallenged in that position. You should read this, whether you’ve seen the movie or not. You should also see the movie, again or for the first time. I…

When Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World slipped into cinemas twenty-two years ago this very day, it did something that Hollywood almost never does: it treated its audience as if they possessed both a pulse and a brain. Peter Weir, that sly Australian magician who…

I’m of the firm belief that you should get three cozy days every Fall. Like, you wake up, it’s raining, it’s a Friday, the coffee pot is calling for a second brew… You get to call out at work. “Yeah, I’m feeling really good this morning. So, I’m taking a cozy day.”

You get to call out at work.

“Yeah, I’m feeling really good this morning. So, I’m taking a cozy day.”

It's all fun and games till someone loses a mind.

What internet/scrolling life did to our brains from 2005-2025 is nothing compared to what AI life will do to our brains, 2025-2045. We’re in an age of accelerating “cognitive atrophy.” Humans losing the capacity to think will become ever more brutish. Ape-like.

A little known fact here is that “Travel By Star” began as a screenplay. For most of my life, I wanted to write movies, and I spent a number of years learning how to get a story across the finish line in that form. When 2020 descended, for the first time in my life, I did not…

How many drafts did you write for Travel By Star and what did that process look like?

The dreadful downside of taking yourself too seriously is that, ironically, you have these unthinking moments where you dash your good work to pieces, turning the majority of your life into a well warranted apology tour. Ask me how I know.

A few years ago when I was in the thick of writing, I was often asked whom I thought would be the audience for my book. I always said my hope was to write something a young man or woman could read at 15, then again at 30, and 45, and 60… Each time seeing something else. Each…

I've been meaning to share my thoughts on "Travel By Star" (written @plainrunner2), and I think it's taken me a moment because this is a weighty book. Don't get me wrong, the plot moves nicely along from the opening scene to the stirring climax, but this book has real gravitas:

It usually starts with an opening image or a key moment in the first act that I can’t shake. Sometimes it’s a little later, but that’s the spark. I only “know” the ending about half the time, and even that is loosely held. The middle is always wide open. I’m not quite sure…

How much of your story do you have in mind before you start writing? Do you know the ending and are discovering everything until then? Or do you just let it ride?

My heartfelt thanks to @spencer_askew for seeing the heart in this book. Since I first set out, I’ve believed that writing is a relationship: with God, with oneself, and finally with the reader. It’s the handshake of souls, begun in good faith, and carried forward in honesty. I…

My family, all together, Christmas morning. A house busting at the seams with memories and laughter. Long midday naps, a mess of papers everywhere, the lingerings of cinnamon rolls in the kitchen, and a fireplace burning low.

What do men want for Christmas?
