In the back of her mind, she appreciates, maybe even enjoys, the attempt to sell the act. For realism purposes.
“Don’t mess her up,” Sasha warns, and hands her off.
But Anne is already standing. “Which one?”
Night falls as they get closer to the house, and with it grows the feeling that they aren’t supposed to be here. The guilt sneaks up on Anne again.
Anne pauses. It’s weird to see Sasha so quiet and unsure of herself. Even weirder to hear her ask for something so directly. Anne’s silent for a moment. She knows how to use it herself, but if Sasha really wants to, she’ll let her.
“Hey,” she whispers. “It’s gonna be fine, okay?”
“It’s not a bad thing,” Sasha continues. “It’s obvious you want the best for us. Like I did.”
“No problem,” Sasha mumbles. She climbs in after her. “You can make it up to us by not making us sleep on the floor.”
Anne collapses onto the couch cushions. A tired sigh wracks itself from her lungs. Marcy sits next to her. She keeps her hands curled at the top of her knees.
“I don’t think so.” Anne reclines, hands behind her head. “I wouldn’t either.”
She takes Anne’s hand. “I don’t know,” she says again. “I hope they hate it.”
Anne assumes Marcy is looking to them for guidance, but has none to give.
He doesn’t give up so easily. “No way. If you wanna switch, you gotta do the dare no matter what.”
Sasha is waiting for them in the doorway. “Hey,” she says casually.
“Nobody dared you that time,” she mumbles, struck with quiet realization.
“Oh, well,” Marcy starts. She closes her locker as gently as she can. “I did have a meeting this weekend for, y’know,” she checks their surroundings. Still a couple students here and there. “Government… things.”
Marcy stumbles over herself. “Not like- not like that. I just meant- since I’ve never done it before. Maybe I could, y’know,” she gulps. “Practice? For the real thing.”
“Sure they do!” Anne stands. She has to break through to them somehow, convince them other people are worth it. The other people here aren’t making it easy. “They were just joking around.”
