Octopuses are surprisingly intelligent, and reproduce at 1 year old. If we'd started a breeding program 50 years ago, we probably could've gotten them smarter than dolphins by now. A disappointing failure of the long-term mad science ecosystem.

Stats question: There seems to be a lot of call for replacing p-values with things like the Bayes factor. But to make a decision, I wonder if what you really want is to do a cost-benefit analysis integrated over the posterior distribution... is that ever doable?

All of you have seen cave art, right? Either sketches or photos in books or online. If you're really lucky, maybe you've been in a cave yourself with a flashlight or something. But is it possible that the way we look at cave art today hides a key aspect of the art? 🧵

I will never forget a conversation I had with the composer Alvin Singleton at @MacDowell1907. I said, "What’s it like being a composer? Whenever I try to write music I get like 40 seconds in and get stuck." "What you call Being Stuck," he said, "I call Composing."

Amazing how much of creative work is generating hope and excitement, finding ways of getting past stuck. It sometimes feels like the main event. I guess this seems cliche, but at least for me it's hard won.

Modern military intelligence satellites have a resolution of 5-10cm per pixel (2-4 inches), so most things are big enough that you can see them from space. "Wow, that's a big tomato" "Yep, it's so big that you can see it from space"

Can’t they just turn the canal off and then turn it on again?

Sorry, 20th and 21st. We should also, incidentally, be more prepared for solar flares. Those also happen every century or two, and a modern one would cripple the electric grid for moths and kill potentially hundreds of millions of people.
