Masc/femme, male/female, man/woman are intertwined binaries that are culturally defined. There has NEVER been room for the range of human existence in those binaries. I don't want to be "masc" or "femme." I'm not a blend. I am distinct. I am only "non" in those binaries.
Gender is NOT a biological fact. Male/female is the biological definition of statistically significant clusters of features. We (colonial societies) NEED a different, nonbio way to talk about (1) body types, (2) the categories of seggsy bits & (3) gender as distinct from those
This is a great response, and one of the many reasons we (white ppl) need to be picking apart our language and re-building it in healthy ways. Science language is and has been used in abusive/oppressive ways regarding race, sexuality, and gender.
it is tough to tight-rope walk that space between "i'm not like other girls" &"no, really, I'm not a girl &i need to be grouped with boys to feel comfortable, b/c i fit both boy &girl culture, but my body limits me to girl, so socially put me with boys but i'm also not a boy."
I have a biologically female body, but I am fixated on male-ness &masculinity, & despite dysphoric episodes, I don't feel a drive to change bodily. I badly want badly to be considered "one of them" when I am around men. Tough not to feel like I'm not betraying women in a way.
if my gender is my relationship between self, body, and the human-defined world, then i've learned it's "apocalyptic himbo"

We (white settlers) divide the world into male and female, man and woman, femme and masc. What is left over for those of us who are neither? #queer #2slgbtqia #lgbtq #nonbinary #neutrois #thirdgender
It’s amazing how many people seem to think “gender is a social construct” means “gender is fake” and not “gender is a complicated set of social and cultural conventions that inform the way that we relate to our interests and bodies and the people around us.”
It’s wild that a source of division in white families is children unlearning their racial biases while elders hold onto them. Whole relationships fractured for trying to be a decent person. Folks yelling at the dinner table because they can’t agree that all human life is valuable
I reached out to a folk dance group in early June, asking if they were interested in experimenting with costuming and choreography in a neutrois/"third" gender way (only saying "third" to index "another"... I really don't like "third" but I would like a noun pls). No response.
dance is a very gendered practice, with steps, costuming and choreography being assigned to genders. i don't think this is an inherently bad thing: we like to mark ourselves. but what happens when we don't fit the gender categories in a type of dance? how do we navigate that?
