Thrilled to announce the Call for Participants for the first annual Monsoon Session Symposium at Mimbres School (Aug 10-14). Six applicants will be chosen to put readings on the table for the event and will receive lodging and meals. Gen attendance tickets will be on sale later.
Absolute nonsense. Nothing is forced upon George. He just keeps making choices and, yes, he does resent the choices he keeps making. And he resents everyone around him for not recognizing him enough for his choices and is periodically very mean to all of them. Boo hoo
This isn't the worst opinion, but it stops short. George does not "despise" his life. He resents it. It has been forced upon him against his will at every turn. Here's the thing: he does it anyway, and he does it well, because for all the resentment he still sees the good in it.…
we ought to make it illegal for the world to be bad.
Everybody is freaking out because 12% of UCSD students can’t do middle school mathematics, but we have so-called distinguished professors at our elite universities that need an AI to be an expert for them in their own field. Which one is worse?
In recent years, many young people have approached the faith through social media, successful programs and popular online Christian witnesses. The danger is that a faith discovered online is limited to individual experiences, which may be intellectually and emotionally…
I firmly believe Kristi Noem initially expanded ICE/recruited her force through the member roles of extremists organizations like Proud Boys, 3%ers, and the former Identity Evropa & League of the South. Many of these members were financially struggling during Biden years, if not…

If the world actually *is* cartoonish, lurid, and ridiculous, we're in a lot of trouble as people who wish to be perceived as sober minded thinkers who don't believe ridiculous things. Our sociality is forcing us to adopt a maladaptive ontology.
I think experience ought to have shown over the recent past that your assumptions about what kinds of things are plausible are probably too restrictive. The real world is more lurid, cartoonish, and ridiculous than would be allowed by the demands of sober and grown up thinking.
The perfect example of this to me is climate change: the "science" part of it is simple. We needed to emit less carbon. Why we didn't is a humanities problem. Science: we now need that plus planetary scale cooperation for mitigation. How we get that is a humanities problem.
Two things that are both true: 1) humanities academics are doing a very bad job 2) humanities is a much more difficult subject than everything else In fact, given 2, wouldn't you expect 1?
For anyone bringing up The Slap, understand: he's saying he can only connect to an expression of violence by denying his own desire for it, inserting a noble idea like love behind the violence. Slapping Chris Rock (to defend Jada) is perfectly consistent with that view
Basically how I'm trying to hang out
