This is why you should pay attention in social studies class. The Canadian system of democracy is *not* the same as in the US. Never has been. Not better or worse, just different.
It’s a parliamentary democracy. That’s how it works here since 1867. Canadians do not elect a prime minister, they vote for a member of parliament for their riding. The party with a majority of seats or support of a majority of MPs is the governing party, and their leader is PM.
