To those who used to work in software development and decided to switch career paths… what are you doing now and are you happier?

@reallycoolcoder I made the career switch to COO at a wealth management firm back in Dec 2022. I was hesitant to make the switch at first b/c I really loved my previous remote dev job & I didn’t want to start at the bottom as a “beginner” in a brand new industry (finance)…

Congrats! That sounds like a really great position for you. There are days I feel so stressed in my position I daydream about taking a jr role somewhere else but there are so many good things about my role I couldn’t give those up.

Good luck if you are considering a career change! And even if you aren't!

Hey Trevor!! Nice to hear from you. I hope you’re doing well too.

I like to think I’m taking “time out” until I find the right employer or become a successful self employed dev; I am doing delivery driving and my mental heath has managed to improve from the nightmare that was my last development role

When did you know it was time to move on? Was there a breaking point or final straw?

Went into product management. Much happier now, I don't get paid as much as the devs, but is sit higher in the hierarchy and I have a better understanding than most PMs because I come from a dev background. Getting estimations is much easier because devs are comfortable with me

After working with several product teams who weren’t technical (but believed they were) I bet your team is so grateful to have you! I have considered technical writing in the future if i ever get to that point.
