Anybody out there with surgical hubris (by which I just mean a steady hand a strong stomach and unlimited access to needles) have any advice on what type of earring to use if you’re piercing your own ears?

If anybody is (or knows of!) a surgery resident looking for a FUNDED research position for their professional development time, message me! I know of some opportunities. #MedTwitter #SurgTwitter #AcademicSurgery

This isn’t about inadequate training. It’s about power and control.

Twitter is kind of fun if you just focus on the stuff that doesn’t matter at all

Don’t see anybody discussing the other major flaw with this analogy—pilots aren’t simultaneously responsible for other people that aren’t on the plane. Locking doors and muting phones/pagers sounds straight up dangerous, what if your patient on the floor develops a neck hematoma?

I just tried Celsius for the first time, drank approximately 1/4 of it, and now I have unlocked a new level of anxiety

I love “being there” for my physician friends … but it’s super disheartening how many of them need advanced-level emotional support but are too scared of future repercussions to seek real therapy 🫠

Every other wrong thing about this aside... I'm dying at the fact that recruiters think this some sort of selling point.

If you don’t have at least a basic understanding of the different types of scientific bias then you’re not “doing your own research” 🫠🫠🫠

I just addressed a group of NYC friends as smogladytes now how do I get that word in the dictionary

Okay, I’ll bite, but let’s do math. Resident working 80 hrs/wk =2 FTE * # different areas resident covers (surely 1 PA wouldn’t cover clinic + consults + floor + pre/post-op + OR) * 2x resident salary… you’re paying 8x BARE MINIMUM to replace residents. How efficient?

Never expected to find myself donating to the campaign of a Tennessee state representative (I’ve been to TN literally once) but here we are.

So please tell me more about how medicine has changed when a president of a whole surgical society chose this as his hill to die on… let me go find some bootstraps to pick up

Surgery needs a wake up call. I hope @STS_CTsurgery addresses the above take by their incoming president at the #STS and takes a hard look at why they remain one of the least diverse subspecialty in surgery.

And what does that mean for our patients? It means that nothing changes in addressing the healthcare disparities they face in the treatment of surgical diseases. ~2/3 of surgeons aren’t even aware of/don’t acknowledge existence of health disparities jamanetwork.com/journals/jamas…

Performative DEI is not enough in surgery. Remember this from the, where Black trainees are disproportionately dismissed from surgery residencies? There’s a a reason for that. The culture of surgery doesn’t believe in inclusion. It practices active exclusion. #STS

If someone had it in them to say this publicly at a conference, i cant imagine what they say indoors. Academic medical centers are not safe places for Black and Indigenous folks.

They say worse things in private. Surgeons love to uphold the myth of meritocracy and make it difficult for those historically excluded from surgery to succeed despite their hard work. For a president of a major society to present this is not the least bit surprising. #STS
