What a difference ten years can make. Great advert for building in flexibility and not listening to those that profess to have a crystal ball or repeating the latest zeitgeist. 2030 anyone? @nicholadrummond @thinkdefence @kingsbury_ollie @wavellroom

A great example of why claims to foresight on the ‘future character of conflict’ should be made with humility. As I argued a decade ago (tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…), a balanced force gives you capacity to respond to what emerges, rather than leaning too heavily on the crystal ball..

Good read from H.R. McMaster @TheAtlantic. Two most interesting ideas: 1. the importance of strategic empathy as a tool in IR, which comes from studying history and culture. 2. How the suffocation of original thought in authoritarian states is a key weakness that will bite.

“Fears and ambitions are inseparable. They explain why the Chinese Communist Party is obsessed with control—both internally and externally.” A fine weekend read by H. R. McMaster on China’s strategic aspirations, at @TheAtlantic ow.ly/9ZUg30qyIL4

Good article. It is too easy to lose the thrust of a message or concept in acronym soup. Keep it clear, keep it simple and know your target audience.

Interesting thread on grand strategy including for not-so-grand actors (@c21st_sailor @A_MacPiarais)

Even the weakest actor needs something like a grand strategy to figure out how to use its diplomatic, informational, military, and economic resources to at least survive if not thrive. A grand strategy need not have grand ends. 9/
