There are five magic words every educator or person working with kids needs to know. “It’s okay, I’m not mad.” They don’t do a lot for the kid who is escaped in front of you but they magically remind you that you are still in control. #edutwitter

When we teach our children that they must follow any rule an adult puts in place, no matter what, we make them vulnerable. When we teach them that they have no real voice, we make them vulnerable. When we tell them them have no right to ask why, or to explain themselves, we make…

The medical model of MTSS assumes something is wrong with a kid. What if we thought of kids more like an ingredient we are cooking with. Nothing is wrong with the kid, some are just spicier than others. A good teacher will know how to bring out the best in each learner.

A behavior is a skill that can improved upon, but a statement about a person’s worth is trauma inducing. There are good and bad choices my students can make, but I don’t have “bad” students. I believe in unconditional positive regard for my students and assuming positive intent.

It would be great if every kid could tell us... “I don't feel safe.” “I don't feel loved.” “I don't feel I belong.” That's just not how it works. So they'll find other ways to tell us. When they do, we need to listen.

There is always going to be a WHY for a behavior. You will almost never find that out from the students in the moment or even directly asking them. They won’t know. They have a need and it isn’t being met. A regulated adult will find it out but never through punishment.

❓ If we're struggling with student engagement, the question is, "How can I forge a stronger relationship with this student?" not, “How should I penalize this student?" #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL #TeacherTwitter
