This is probably true also for colonial Latin American jobs like mine. And also true for most early modernists. And if you are a specialists of Ancient or Medieval history, then forget about it. Basically all pre- modern fields are screwed. It’s horrible.

It is kind of wild to think that if you are a tenured or tenure-track early American lit prof, you are almost certainly the last person who will have that job in the history of your institution.

Great piece by Richard Ovenden on the attack on the BL, ongoing efforts to restore services and the abject failure of government to provide necessary support. standard.co.uk/comment/britis…

A fine essay on two great historians of science. intellectualhistory.web.ox.ac.uk/article/jim-be…

Not to mention your terrific piece in tje Chronicle on Omer Bartov.

Julia! This is so unbelievably, extraordinarily generous, I don't know what to say. Thank you!

The eternal Hyde Park question.

Is there anywhere in/neat Hyde Park Chicago that does normal New York type pizza? Neither deep dish nor thin & crispy?

Thank you so much, David. This is really helpful.

James Sweet has started a pretty predictable Twitterstorm with his critique of “presentism,” and of “read[ing] the past through the prism of contemporary social justice issues—race, gender, sexuality, nationalism, capitalism.” But what is presentism? /1 historians.org/publications-a…

They always ask me for ID, despite my grey locks and beard. But the beer in my case contains alcohol.

The poetry of NJ in summer

Our front yard is the same. Just came in with the dogs, dazzled. Gnight.

So sorry about the COVID. Feel better soon.

Back in Austin! I marked the end of the semester with a mostly wonderful trip to Germany & London (unfortunately I did encounter the dreaded covid at the end—apologies to those I owe emails). Getting back on my feet and looking forward to seeing folks in ATX before long.
