Time to make 2024 updates to my annual “opinions about solar” thread. If you like these, the second edition of my book, Solar Power Finance Without The Jargon, is new this year. A 30% discount code WSQ0437 is valid on publisher website until end of Oct. worldscientific.com/worldscibooks/…

By the way, I have mostly decamped to bluesky and mastodon.

just pasting this from Jenny's book for the record.. "In addition, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi decided inexplicably that there was some kind of prestige to having the cheapest solar. Mostly, this gave them an incentive for the government to internalise various costs…

In January 2024 we expected 2024 solar new build to be about 513GW(DC). Now we think it was about 599GW (DC). Mind you there is still 65GW of buffer in that to cover analyst cowardice. I expect it'll mostly turn up in identifiable markets though.

In October I spoke with the Climate Curious podcast about solar power and what's happening there, and got a bit more broad about what can be done to fight against climate change. tedxlondon.com/podcasts/how-s…

Swiss utility CKW (Axpo) now offers a power tariff for private customers based on peak power demand, which in future could be used to incentivise consumers to use power when the sun's out. First time I've seen this in Switzerland. axpo.com/es/en/newsroom…

All right Mr. Killjoy

Do not ever straighten rebar like this. I cannot emphasize how bad this is for structural integrity of reinforced concrete structures.

So I haven't listened to this to check if I sounded really stupid (it did feel like that at one point!) but I did a podcast with Pushkin's What's Your Problem, entitled, "How The Sun Won: The Solar Era, Part 1". pushkin.fm/podcasts/whats…
