We used this portable heart-lung machine as salvage therapy in a younger patients whose lungs had been damaged by #COVID. Until @ongov provides essential workers with #PaidSickDays, workplace protection & access to vaccinations, this machine will continue to be used.

It took: 5 MDs 4 ICU RNs 4 RTs 1 perfusionist & 3 critical care paramedics 3 hrs To save my ~40 yr old #COVID patient with #ECMO It would have cost @ongov $114 (8h x min wage) to allow her husband to take a day off work from his factory in known outbreak. We have lost our way.

I can not imagine ANY OTHER INDUSTRY where a worker is asked to continue to go to work while COVID positive (asymptomatic or not) - this is NOT because migrant workers are essential workers, but rather that their labour is essential, and their lives are not. #sdoh #COVID19

NEVER FORGET Kalief Browder. A young black man who sat on Rikers Island for 3 YEARS without trial for a backpack he DIDN’T steal. He committed suicide after spending two yrs in solitary confinement. 730 days alone.
