Today was good. I have put it in the bank of good days for whenever I might need it.
21 years ago this summer I nearly died by suicide because I knew I’d never be happy again. Today I put away the dishes then stood in the garden and let summer rain soak me to my skin. I felt so alive and quietly euphoric I wanted to reach back through time to tell me I was wrong.
I was never able to read much at my illest. One thing I could handle was an old dictionary of quotes. I remember first coming across this one from Rilke and it was such therapy for me: Let everything happen to you Beauty and terror Just keep going No feeling is final
I have written a new book called The Comfort Book. It is out one month from today. I wrote it last year in lockdown to calm myself down. Here is a chapter from it.

Incredible how normal it is for women to be told not to go out alone after dark. Yet how strange and inexplicable this would seem if the same instruction - or even a curfew - were issued to men.
