How to justify a 6 months work gap. I was working on an java backend project with a patner without formal paperwork in place and it seems now that I won't be getting stakes. Any ideas??

Most people (including myself) cannot come up with the slow and fast pointer approach for finding cycle in linked list on their own. Understanding and implementing is the easier part. Handful people in the world have the talent to come up with these ideas. I am not one of them.
