Paul is conflating two kinds of experts: - Those that demonstrate high competence, and are rarely called experts (it's superfluous) - Those that do not, and hence must be called experts (otherwise you wouldn't know that they are) People mainly have issues with the second kind.
People who think they no longer depend on trusting experts only survive because they're mistaken. Every time you get on a plane you trust experts implicitly about a million questions you're not even aware of.
