LaTeX rule of thumb: \textbf, \huge, \sffamily and similar should stay in the preamble and only there. Title pages are an exception.

For inline it is \(…\) in LaTeX instead of TeX’s $…$. But it’s ok to use both in LaTeX.

TeX uses $$ to begin and end math display mode. In LaTeX, \[ and \] are recommended instead.
