Some personal news: After 11 years writing for The Verge, I’m taking a job as its senior editor for tech & policy. Trying to think of a joke to end this with, but honestly the site has been my home for a decade-plus and I’m just excited to start a new chapter there.
Hey! Coming out of hibernation to say: if you want to talk PSVR2 with me, I'm not checking my Twitter notifications much these days, but I'm on Mastodon at mastodon.social/@thedextriarchy
Little more detail on my HTC exclusive this morning at The Platform That Shall Not Be Named!
My creation has run rampant. I demand their extermination.
For the evening crew! I still have slots for sending you a game ruleset that will exist nowhere except some obscure AI databank and a single letter that I send you.
In the spirit of trying new communications platforms, an experimental end-of-year project: I will handwrite the rules to a custom AI-generated board/tabletop game and send them via physical mail for up to 37 people. Details here. robotlit.com/post/703710967…
Incidentally I'm @thedextriarchy@mastodon.social if you want my depressing thoughts on how AI can't kill writing as a profession if it's already dead!
Happy Holidays! You may not have a job when you get back from celebrating with family!!!!!! No comment!
New: @washingtonpost publisher Fred Ryan announces layoffs coming in the first quarter 2023, number unclear. Refuses to answer or take questions in Newsroom Town Hall. @PostGuild
My thoughts on the AI discourse
I unironically miss the days of speculating about what it would mean if he "open sourced the algorithm." At least it's an ethos!
It's striking that Musk has not laid out any principles for how Twitter moderation should work. He's clearly not a fan of the old regime but he's established nothing to actually replace it.
So... the entire production budget went to building a primitive nuclear weapon?
Christopher Nolan says he recreated the first nuclear weapon detonation without using CGI for #Oppenheimer (via @totalfilm)
I think this will change as more people experiment, but current-gen AI art/writing is in a weird spot where the default style is fun for me to generate but I often don't find it that compelling to see secondhand. theverge.com/23501694/ai-ar…
