Tender rejections - history does repeat. Tender rejections are following the same trajectory as in 2019, which is a bullish sign for the end of the year and headed into 2025.

Effective organizations generally test new practices before rolling the practice out widely. Obviously. But it's so common to see engineering organizations mandate new practices/architectures/etc without any testing. Why does this happen so often?

An observation about devops: At Big Tech, engineers take on all the operations work, oncall, deal with being woken up at night, b/c they are paid very, very well to do this. Hard to copy this model if you don't pay like those companies do. Else you need something different.

Does anybody know of an impressive AI? Haven’t seen much development in the space lately.

Really loving Slack’s recent UI update for sending DMs. Instead of clicking “+”, you now click “Direct messages -> Create -> Start direct message”. When it comes to the most common flows, why click once when you can click three times? 🤡

Some alarms going off about the new capabilities of AI but I can’t help feeling like this is an age-old reaction.

Can ChatGPT fill out all of these peer review feedback requests?

an observation i’ve made over the years is that every sort of highly-regarded position selects for extreme stress tolerance & emotional resilience as a filtering mechanism beyond raw talent & intellect which are typically table stakes. doctors, athletes, actors, execs.

Another day, another now former Amazon software engineer sharing how Amazon put them through hell thanks to a meritless PIP which was the set up so they would fail and be fired. Amazon has a 6% target to fire people and they do. Every single year. And yet few people know this.

No joke: there is a *gigantic* consultancy to be made out of the problem statement "Slack stops working when we reached X00 employees. What just happened." Plausibly a software company, too, but there are many companies who would pay $X00k just to get that question answered.
