Starting today, any task that I delegate to AI, I'm going to capture in my ai-learnings-log. I'll include a brief description of what I did, what the AI's plan was, and any alternative plans it had. I'll also include the platform I used AI in (i.e., Warp, ChatGPT interface,…
This is a cynical viewpoint. I'm happy to report I left crippling poverty and helped lift family members out of it, too.
I want to remind you again today, that if you were born into a poor family, you can NEVER escape poverty until the day you die. You will be struggling, with the hope that you would. It never happens.
"We Can Terraform the American West" - highly underrated blog post by @CJHandmer (as a Nevadan, I think this is a great proposal) caseyhandmer.wordpress.com/2024/10/26/we-…
I won’t tell anyone I’ve won the lottery, but there will be signs

getting good sentence-makers out of billions of years of "find food and reproduce" requires a consciousness-inducing complexity that getting good sentence-makers out of "here's every sentence ever written" doesn't
We’ve defended higher ed from both government overreach and ideological litmus tests. But now academia’s biggest guild says diversity of thought itself is “anathema“ denying even the existence of the most basic and obvious problem in higher education. Admitting a lack of…
Theory: most of the last two decades of technology (online, social media related) advancements have been detracting from collective human intelligence.
I mean, objectively, this is good. Even if it’s internet clickbait
You don’t need to be smarter, you need to be more disciplined.

Substack has become the center of my intellectual life these past 2 months (surprisingly).
Humility is a skill which is not widely taught but should be.
Fukuyama explains why AI is not going to solve most of our problems. In the material world, intelligence is not the bottleneck

Harvard is a top-5 university in the world. It’s “one of the most difficult schools to gain admission to…but once they get in, many of its students skip class and fail to do the reading.” “When they do show up for class, they are focused on their devices, and are reluctant to…

I’m very sympathetic to the idea that academic science and engineering is generally not friendly to risk taking. Thus many scientists and engineers are instead starting companies rather than being part of academia.
A cocktail of antacids?
Reminder that tariffs have caused unambiguous increases in US retail prices. Anyone in the Trump admin who claims otherwise is lying to you.
Tariffs continue to show up in prices: • Imported goods: 6.5% above pre-tariff trends • Domestic goods: 4.5% above Updated charts and data available at pricinglab.org/tariff-tracker

lol got served this ad on Reddit. It’s a bit unflattering that the student is building something with blocks. It def doesn’t look “rigorous”

Over the last year, my trust in people has gone to new lows. Currently dealing with a property manager who looks over a rental property I own and he owes me $11k 😫 Should have gotten a lawyer sooner.
Ian, thanks for challenging Christina. I read some of her papers early on and a lot of the data and methodology seemed far too complicated to prove her point. It felt like there was something that she was trying to obfuscate.
“Living in a two-parent family doesn’t advantage black kids that much.” This is a stunningly false claim that defies both common sense and mountains of social science evidence. Five years ago, I challenged Harvard sociologist @christinajcross who made the case regarding “The…

The power of reading a book with another person or a small group of people is understated. It’s quite a powerful bonding experience!
The one flaw of the liberty movement is an exogenous flaw: most people like to take orders and follow rules. There will always be natural opposition to more freedoms. Most people in the liberty movement have the agency and know-how to make and live by their own rules. They move…
And hard but worth it 💪
