Christianity doesn’t promise that when you come to Jesus you won’t experience darkness; it promises that though you experience darkness Jesus still comes to you. #Advent #todayssermon
In Christ's death the curtain is torn in half. (Matt 27) And in his death, the dividing wall of hostility was destroyed. (Eph 2) It's easy to celebrate the torn curtain, and ignore the dividing wall. But the gospel will have nothing of it. Curtain & Wall must come down.

The Word became flesh and dwelled among us. The Word didn’t become a religious system. The Word didn’t become a theological checklist. The Word didn’t become a political movement. The Word didn’t become an estatic experience. The Word became flesh. Loving embodied existence.
Following Jesus means we: Love deeply. Do justice. Repent often. Forgive frequently. Pray without ceasing. Live contemplatively. Admit our duplicity. Do the inner work. Be connected to a community. Laugh at ourselves. Boldly proclaim his Lordship and his kingdom.

Preparing a sermon for a funeral tonight for a longtime congregant. Theologian Kosuke Koyama imagined Jesus says this to those who see him upon death: ‘You’ve had a difficult journey. You must be tired, and dirty. Let me wash your feet. The banquet’s ready.’ Beautiful words.
I'm all for Bible literacy. But let's not fool ourselves. We can be biblically literate, and still be spiritually degenerate.
In our minds holiness is usually about what we abstain from. But Jesus saw holiness as what you give yourself to. Namely, mercy, love & hospitality. In the end, the holiest people are the ones who love well.
Growth is a slow, secret, unspectacular affair.

Richard Foster: "The fruit of the Spirit is not push, drive, climb, grasp and trample. Life is more than a climb to the top of the heap."
Jesus said, "Go learn what this means: I desire mercy, not sacrifice." If your religious practices (and I'm all in favor of the healthy practice of the Christian religion) do not lead you in the way of mercy, then rethink your religion. I am still learning this.
