There are now just three weeks until the launch of #Bercow10. To mark launch day -21, here is what #children & #youngpeople told us. If you haven't already, there's still time to join the @ICANcharity & @RCSLT #Thunderclap: bit.ly/2F4TrXa

BBC Two - Victoria Derbyshire, Judged for having a 'naughty' child. All these children had social comm difficulties. More funding for speech & language would make a big difference. bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05…

Spoken language is not an SEN issue, or an EAL issue. Spoken language is for ALL students. When will we get a curriculum that reflects this? #oracy

UK Speech and Language Therapists: time to get angry. Average salaries are going down fast.

Sad that average UK #SLT pay dropped 15% to £28k since 2011, while psychologist pay rose 25% to £41k. Remember that hard won 1997 landmark victory #equalpay 4 women that showed parity of roles? independent.co.uk/news/landmark-… @wespeechies @RCSLT @pjenderby

This is why the work we do as Speech and Language Therapists in Young Offenders Teams in East London is so important.

Only 34% of the young offenders could articulate the ‘story’ in enough detail for the #RJ facilitator/victim to get a sense of what happened. Most stories contained little facts, were incoherent, too brief, contained many silences & non-linear link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Look what I found when preparing 'my career' presentation @WordAware!

There is a growing movement of teachers and educators in all parts of the country who are passionate about elevating speaking to the same status as reading and writing in our schools. This is a moral cause - a route to social mobility @voice21oracy

So it's not merely the number of words that children need to hear, but the conversational opportunities also. Talk, listen & interact with kids (lots and lots)

One of the problems with #devlangdis: it's so hard to recognise if you're not an expert

Super important! Children with #devlangdis might decode words but not understand them. Parents may not be aware of their child's difficulties.

This is why we have introduced @WordAware at WEINS and why I find #boldbeginnings has dangerously missed the point. If we really want to narrow the gap, this is what we have to focus on.

The number of words a child hears before the age of five helps determine their future
