RIP Dick Cheney For @inthesetimesmag inthesetimes.com/article/mamdan…
Biden’s attempt to restrict China’s power failed, leaving the US weaker and the world a more dangerous place. But much of the foreign policy world still yearns for an irreversible escalatory spiral. For @RStatecraft, I ask whether Trump can break with it.
Two big questions now: 1) Will Trump rein in the hawks in his admin who are constantly undoing each truce, so genuine negotiations can finally commence? 2) When will China act against the China exclusion measures the US is forcing on third countries? ft.com/content/399ad4… 2/2
When I say the US has bet its post-pandemic economy on AI while China has bet its on green energy, this is what I mean: Here, AI related companies account for 75% of S&P 500 returns since ChatGPT's launch. In China, green tech accounts for one quarter of GDP growth.
Xi's new NDC call for 7-10% ghg reductions by 2035 is a deep disappointment, more consistent with 3 degrees C of warming than 2.5, let alone 2 or 1.5. Of course Trump is worse and this is still directionally correct, but this is pathetic for the state that wants to be the leader.
As China prepares to publish its emission reduction targets for 2035, likely the most significant climate announcement of the year, here is a chart to compare the target to what needs to happen under different global climate targets.
I’m very excited for this discussion with @daveckang, @SiuHeiWong2, and @ZenobiaChan. They wrote “What Does China Want?”, the rare academic article that started a social media controversy. Sep 25 Thu 1–2pm ET
