Until 1977, Unix primarily ran on the DEC PDP-11. In 1977, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) released the VAX-11/780—a significantly more powerful, 32-bit successor to the PDP-11. The VAX came with its own operating system, VMS. Almost immediately, Bell Labs began porting Unix…

i grew up with all of these as a little boy at the UCSB computer lab in Santa Barbara, California learned to program in C, Unix and VMS it was the start of a long career in tech 😊 these machines have a special place in my memory and heart thanks for posting! 🌞😍

Wow 32 bit computing in 1977

Fortran, COBOL, Pascal, and then C. Flat learning curve.

In grad school, in the 1980s, I used a Unix emulator called EUNICE on a VAX 11/780.

Oh my .. 11/780 .. used this back in the early 1980s at Brighton Poly. Sat in the VT100/200 rooms coding Pascal and then The Gandalf would log you off having filled the type ahead buffer whilst your code was ingested for compilation. Such Fun!!!

And Apple's macOS is based on that BSD distribution.

These early unix workstations and servers like the pdp11 are absolute works of art and craftsmanship. What happened?

システムコンソールはラインプリンタ出力だった。

I wonder if anyone has an 11/780 still running somewhere today

Where did Dec Unix / OSF-1 come from?

OMG I used to clean those monitors and keyboards! My first job while in college!

We had a VAX system but were not allowed access to it in '88 at an engineering firm. Barely into Lotus 1-2-3 and frustrated.
