My biggest argument against free will is songs getting stuck in my head. Is all this solving for myself a necessary distraction for my earthly form to carry the glorious message? “It’s gonna be gonna be golden! It’s gonna be gonna be golden!”
One thing I learned from experience is that those who do solidly well in life never, practically never, do anything in bad faith. Reduce bad faith from, say, that tiny 5% bit to 0%, and see how it works wonders. Simple advice, @__paleologo.
I remember Taleb saying somewhere in the distant past, when he was still exceptionally sane, something like "When you can do a few thing very well, you can afford a lot of mistakes". I came to appreciate this heavy-tailedness of positive payoffs only later. *Every single firm* I…
Somehow these lunatics made the story about ebikes.
LATEST: Horrifying video shows a group of teens on e-bikes surrounding and beating a man in his 60s in Hermosa Beach — leaving him unresponsive on the pavement. Witnesses say the victim was just walking home with a pizza. Hermosa Beach PD is urging anyone with info to come…
Betsy and Mike have been our early adopters for the last few years. It has been a complete grind for them and us. Betsy would say, “All I want is a warm meal during harvest. I want to be able to do laundry during harvest.” For a while we had one team metric, “give Betsy dinner.”…
This is the dumbest quote. “Newtonian mechanics doesn’t fully describe planetary motion,” was an extraordinary claim that was vindicated by one observation of mercury. The scientific method is awesome BECAUSE the tiniest observation topples the juggernaut of the status quo.
“Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” ― Carl Sagan
It is uncanny in this era to be grateful for a politician, but Lurie is an exception. The West Coast has its Bloomberg and, yes, most people chalk up the city’s turnaround to the energy he brought to the Mayor’s office. His tenure emphasizes just how much his predecessors…
The last three dinner parties I’ve been at in SF, with completely non-political people, have all at some point descended into everyone exclaiming some version of “so thankful for @DanielLurie”
Another masterpiece from Mikaela Shiffrin! 🇺🇸💥 #FISAlpine #WorldCupLevi
After years of dinners with FAANG friends, you experienced the progression of from being seen as nobody to a tier one AI company. They always joked, “Are you still working on Full Self-Driving?” Then you sat there quietly eating your own food. For many, top AI companies means…
Certain beliefs are impervious to evidence. Money leading to better educational outcomes is one. The documentary, “Waiting for Superman” covered this nicely.
It doesn't matter how much money you put into schools. Here's a cross-sectional overview. Per pupil spending and math scores.
I thought this was the cover for project Hail Mary.
Immense planning and technical precision was required for this absolutely preposterous (but real) view: I captured my friend @BlackGryph0n transiting the sun during a skydive. This might be the first photo of it's kind in existence. See a video of this moment in the reply 👇
I once calculated that I could put valuables in a uber in Cape Town and have them drive around in perpetuity for less than it would cost to store it in SF. This is much better!
You can ship a 40 foot container from Belgium to China for $50 and people think capitalism is failing.
There is no such thing as an expert.
A very frustrating part of the AI Wars has been the willingness by some to ignore experts in favour of listening to those who were telling them what they wanted to hear.
This phenomenon exists in high risk endeavors. Many call it God.
The “Third Man Syndrome” In moments of extreme danger, many climbers and explorers report sensing an unseen presence—a calm, guiding force that seems to encourage and lead them to safety. It feels like an invisible companion walking beside them, offering strength when all hope…
This year did not improve.
So I’m basically raising my kids Amish. No tv no phones. Barely any toys with batteries. 6 yo is baseball obsessed. I allow him to watch the World Series. Immediately he sees ads for sex pills and a male stripper show called “the full Monty.” TV is a sewer.
I need to meet this group. Because it is how i’m raising my kids.
There is a movement I found on Instagram where people delivery choose to live in 90s, refusing all technology after 2000. Like an intermediate form of the Amish.
