Initially, researchers provided query biased summaries for the selected documents. Later, they considered using summaries for selecting documents! Crazy, isn't it?
We need not search the entire index every time a query has to be served. We refer to this as selective search. Each fragment of index which is usually topically oriented. We call such fragments as shards.
To rank 10 people, do you know that you have three options? Firstly, you can give an absolute score for each person. Then rank them by score. You may pairwise compare them. You may also look at them all at a time. We call these pointwise, pairwise and listwise approaches in IR.
