5/ Mirthless is built on a love for this country and its diverse voices. Until everyone has a home, none of us truly do.
4/ It’s hard to sing about cosmic longing when people are being denied something as fundamental as a place to call home. We stand against the exclusion of vulnerable groups and call for a more compassionate approach to citizenship.
3/ As a band whose music reflects themes of alienation and loss, this amendment hits close to home. Statelessness is a harsh reality for many in this country, and with these changes, the door just got smaller for those seeking the basic dignity of belonging.
2/ But, as with anything that appears too good to be true, there’s a catch. The new law excludes children of permanent residents, cuts off the stateless after they turn 18, and introduces a language test for foreign wives. Progress is always easier when you leave people behind.
1/ Today’s passing of the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2024 marks a bittersweet moment for Malaysia. On one hand, gender equality is finally acknowledged, with Malaysian mothers now granted the same rights as fathers to pass on their nationality to their children. Long overdue.
