Yup, no mentioning of US tariff retaliation towards China's new REE export controls on China's major news portals. I suspect the US strong reaction caught Beijing by surprise too. They may not want to further escalate, while back channel communications happen over the weekend.
Very quiet on Chinese state media. Not only that, Pres. Trump 100% tariff threat was not reported much. Must have guidance on NOT to further add unintended sentiment.
I am curious about this idea that Beijing is surprised. This implies they expected Trump to just take it sitting. But why would Beijing think that? Because they thought this wasn’t a big deal? Or because they thought it was such a trump card that the US would have no choice
but to submit? But even if the latter, why would they expect Trump of all people to surrender *immediately without even a gesture of a fight*?
