Huge news for anyone working in tech in the US. Noncompetes are now banned: not just in California (like before), but nationwide. Very, very relevant for anyone at Amazon (which is the Big Tech that has enforced noncompetes even for low-level engineering positions).

The ideal long term solution often looks different than the feasible tactical solution right now. When people wonder what engineers do all day if they aren't working on visible changes, they are trying to connect the dots from tactical solutions to the more ideal ones.

Had never written z80 assembly before, yet here I am reading the eZ80 CPU manual to implement a gap buffer for a text editor on an Agon Light. Fun times!

If Elon Musk can afford to lose $200 billion in a single year, he can afford a wealth tax.

Url shortner business logic done! workdad.dev/posts/service-…

Want to see how to use sqlc.dev and @_sqlite_ with Go to create a storage API? Here is the second post of the series. workdad.dev/posts/service-…

A dev who can build something alone quickly may not have the skillset to evaluate these tradeoffs. Deciding that if you are smart and can’t figure it out, it must be broken is irresponsible. This is why a curious mindset is one of the greatest strengths an engineer can possess.

Finally have the first post! workdad.dev/posts/service-…

I'll write a series of posts about this, including the simple app I'm developing, on workdad.dev. Stay tuned!

Checks out

you become a senior dev when you realize you can't rip out every piece of legacy code that annoys you and you just have to live with it

Well what do you know, this setup does indeed work! Created an url shortner that is hosted on my machine using the setup as described: aki.ooo/V6DvZ-Rz (aki.ooo sounds like the portuguese "aqui, ó!", which is an expression to call attention to something.)

Ok, this is actually pretty cool. I can get a $7 vps on @vpsdime, install @caddyserver and, using @Tailscale, have it reverse proxy to a machine in my house to serve live traffic on HTTPS. So now I finally have a use for the many Raspberry Pi I have lying around in my drawers!

18mo usually only sleeps with mom at night. As I waited for her to take a bath, with him on my lap, I put on the Zizek vs Peterson debate because I had never watched it. 5 mins in and baby 😴

The idea that there are people at Twitter who are all gung-ho about the Musk takeover is just blowing my mind. Crunch mode does not work. It has never worked. The research on it not working is over a century old and has been repeatedly confirmed.
