Writing myself into being. Nerding out on social work, social interaction, EMCA, academia, miscellanies. RT by interest or amusement. The posh stuff is @ RG
This is my surprised face (note: not surprised). But it is so much easier to do wellness workshops than to actually deal with micromanagement, not enough staff, not enough paid leave, bloated middle management, myopic policies and lack of vision. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
So this is happening ... it's a bit exciting to bring all of this together!
Justin Canty @writingin2being and I getting creative designing the new #socialwork clinic we will be piloting @UTAS_ in 2024 - a new approach to connecting practice, teaching and research to enhance social and wellbeing outcomes for the #Tasmanian community!
What underpins this is the disdain shown for staff time. The time allocated for teaching activities is grossly underestimated. Time for research is doing it on your own time or being allocated minimal time. Whole sector runs on underestimates of time actually required for tasks
So often the huge dollar figures universities are stealing from staff are rightly the focus of wage theft reporting. But it's important to never lose sight of the immense individual costs to staff. Please read these courageous accounts in @theage. theage.com.au/business/workp…

This is what I've been grappling with when it comes to ChatGPT & the enthusiasm that many seem to have for it. It is exploitation plain & simple, questionable to use from an educational perspective & we're not questioning any of it. Just told we're Luddites if we're not for it.
4 ways OpenAI appropriates labor & externalizes costs of ChatGPT: – authors of training data not compensated – workers in Kenya paid $1–$2/hr – those who identify failures not acknowledged/compensated – civil society, academia, regulators left scrambling to adapt/mitigate risks.
In a follow up tweet: And they toned this scene down so it could be broadcast. the original cut was too confronting and violently graphic.

Two things that students need to hear right away, and unequivocally. Enough of the “look to your left and right, two of you won’t finish” scaremongering.
Seen some academics puzzled as to why ChatGPT invents academic references and why its "database" stops at 2021. That's a fundamental misunderstanding of how it works. It's a language model, not a knowledge base. Produces "continuations" not "facts". We need a new AI literacy.
At the designers admission, DOTE is, to date, organized with according to how the designers work (this makes sense!). There is a stunning range of variations in how we all work though, and so if you have time, do check out the survey to throw in some pointers on how You work.

Final call out to the twitterverse - for anyone caring for #children with #parentsinprison or any #socialworkers supporting families ... Please share this survey link bit.ly/3hcJuhk Will take 15 mins. In a range of languages, and in audio.

Ultimately, Trade Unions work and that is exactly why the Tories are going after them.
