New CWD map. We hate new CWD maps. Welcome to the club, Jones and Howard Counties. The good news is prevalence is still low statewide and hunters and landowners can help slow the spread! 🔗naturalresources.extension.iastate.edu/wildlife/cwd

This 7 day weather is not good for the 2023 syrup season in the UP! We need freezing nights and day time temps in the upper 30s to low 40s. Looks like the end of the season sap trials begin.

There is a tradeoff with fast growing trees for biomass that are a few years past their normal rotation age. Courtesy of a severe icestorm in the UP. @MSUAgBio Forestry innovation center took a direct hit. Should be a fun summer of cleanup!

This beech tree failed and took out our wet/dry maple mainline system because of beech bark disease. The loss of beech in our woods means one less mast crop for our squirrels, birds, deer, bear etc. And an overall decline in tree species diversity!

It only takes a few squirrels to ruin a maple producer's day! Squirrel damage is a major reason tubing system vacuum drops. Loss of vacuum = loss of sap production. @MSUAgBio @MSUForestry #squirreldamage

Proper forest management allowing sugar maple trees to grow a large canopy of leaves = faster taphole closure rates. This photo shows a 1 year wound closure! @MSUAgBio @yooperforestry @maplesyrup @forestservice @USDA

A properly installed tap should not crack the wood and bark above and below the taphole. This annual wound in the tree will yield 10 to 15 gallons of sap per season making over a quart of finished maple syrup! @MSUAgBio @maplesyrup @yooperforestry
