Hi! Nancy Duchesneau from @EdTrust here - I'm cuddling a lot with my cat and going for runs as often as I can. #AdvCoursesChat
A3: 1/2 In addition to the added challenges in accessing academic content now, the pandemic is hitting families of color hardest, meaning students of color are more likely to experience stress related to the health of family members at this time. #AdvCoursesChat
A6: First, we need to expand the criteria of what it means for students to be “ready” for #AdvancedCoursework. #AdvCoursesChat
A4: States can: 1) Invest in creating more advanced coursework opportunities. 2) Provide families with info about opportunities. 3) Eliminate barriers to enrollment & make enrollment automatic 4) Hold schools accountable for equitable access. #AdvCourseChat
A3 Current inequities will be exacerbated by COVID19 (ie, summer work, pre-reqs, if we hold onto them, will dispro impact students whose at-home conditions don't enable meeting these. A fear: that this will be excused as a natural product of crisis.#AdvCoursesChat

(2/2)…and #2. automatically enroll students in advanced courses based on data the school already has. #AdvCoursesChat
Thank YOU for a great #AdvCoursesChat!
Buenas! My name is Jaime, a Higher Ed Policy Analyst @edtrust, and my #selfcare has been dedicating time to dancing 1 full bachata song every day. #AdvCoursesChat
A2: Unnecessary barriers to entry — including overly narrow selection and entrance criteria — leads to fewer students of color being identified for #AdvancedCoursework. Thanks for your research on this @EdTrust! #AdvCoursesChat
A2.1 Getting access to #AdvancedCoursework often requires navigating the system--maybe a parent advocates for you, or you attend tutoring or test prep outside of school. Students of color often have less access to this social capital. #AdvCoursesChat

A7: I haven't seen this done, but I think a deep re-imagining of what school is supposed to be and do, applying targeted universalism so that BIPOC students are at the center of the design, is a promising practice to stop locking black and brown and poor kids out #AdvCoursesChat
Thank YOU for a great #AdvCoursesChat!

Same thread for students. It's not a kids aren't ready issue. It's a "we aren't enrolling BIPOC/Low Income students" issue. #AdvCoursesChat
A7: Schools across New York are taking important steps to address the disparities in access. Read how @YonkersSchools @Buffalo_Schools @RCSDWilsonComm @PathwaysInTech and @EqualOppSchools are improving access for all students at EquityInEdNY.org/PassedOver. #AdvCoursesChat
Q7: Inequities in #AdvancedCoursework have not budged in decades. What are some promising practices you’ve seen that can ensure Black & Latino students are not locked out of these opportunities? #AdvCoursesChat
A6: We must ensure students have access to necessary supports: technology, internet access, tutoring, regular and helpful feedback, opps for peer study sessions, and a community that believes they can achieve at a very high level. #AdvCoursesChat

A7.2 Summer enrichment programs designed to prepare students of color for advanced courses (many summer programs tend to be oriented around remediation). #AdvCoursesChat
A6 @EqualOppSchools offers student experience survey that helps schools assess climate and plan for effective supports. Any feedback (focus groups, survey, reg check ins) that brings students in to their own learning will help educators design the right supports #AdvCoursesChat
A7.1 Making algebra in middle school a standard course for every child.#AdvCoursesChat
A7. We need to challenge the basic assumptions behind academic tracking & come up with creative de-tracked models. AP/IB for All models are one solution. Embedded/Open Honors programs are also promising: tcf.org/content/report… #AdvCoursesChat

This right here! 👇 We need to make sure that the student voice is a part of the discussion! #AdvCoursesChat
A6 Once they're in, listen to students! If they're experiencing belonging uncertainty in classroom, don't blame it on them (intimidation, lack of motivation, etc.). Ask: and how are WE making sure students know they belong here and WILL succeed? #AdvCoursesChat #AdvCoursesChat
A6. Part of success is social-emotional. Once students of color are enrolled in higher-level classes, schools should provide social supports--like peer mentor programs & identifying teacher advocates--to help these students succeed. #AdvCoursesChat
Q6: Affirm students, assist with test preparation, and make the curriculum culturally relevant. #AdvCoursesChat
