RT @SoftwareSaved: As part of our Collaborations Workshop 2019 speed blog series, today we present: "What are best practices for research software documentation?" bit.ly/2N3XDxS #collabw19 #bettersoftwarebetterresearch

3. Reuse, don't reinvent Build just the part that is unique to your research. Use and contribute to other software to help focus the limited maintenance effort. (18/20) #bettersoftwarebetterresearch

1. Publish your software, and publish it early Take the opportunity to build new collaborations, get feedback and improve trust and reproducibility (16/20) #bettersoftwarebetterresearch

Peeking over the shoulders of giants: reading other peoples' research ideas to influence your research Standing on the shoulders of giants: using other peoples' research software to accelerate your research #BetterSoftwareBetterResearch

Great news - It’s very encouraging to see that UK funding councils understand the value of software as an infrastructure investment, and allocate funding accordingly! @UKRI_News #RSE #OpenScience #bettersoftwarebetterresearch

A thread about software code quality, and what this means for research: Let’s start with *most code is pretty crap* 💩 (1/20)

Are you a researcher who codes? We’d really like to hear how you find research software via our 10min anonymous survey ardc.edu.au/news/research-… #ResearchSoftwareAU #RSE #BetterSoftwareBetterResearch #visibleResearchSoftware #womenwhocode

I actually think “good enough” is what we should be striving for - all code doesn’t need to be perfect, it depends on how it’s being used. But the problem is a good definition of “good enough” is different from what we actually see allowed/rewarded #bettersoftwarebetterresearch

Good to see @bcs getting involved - publishing code is essential for trust & reproducibility. @SoftwareSaved happy to talk about exp on the frontline. Big challenge is effort required given low recognition. #bettersoftwarebetterresearch (Cc @batteredbluebox @ProfTomCrick )

One of the things I’m proudest of from the work we do at @SoftwareSaved is helping our Fellows drive improvement, for themselves and their research community. Read @RobynAnneGrant talking about their experience as a Fellow on our blog. #bettersoftwarebetterresearch

Not the case for all academic code but certainly for most. “Reliability” is probably better described as “fragility” and “buggy mess” as “hard to maintain and reuse”. The inability to reuse by others in the field is the key issue to solve. #bettersoftwarebetterresearch

Last retweet. Has the RSE community seen this? @npch , @jamespjh, @sjh5000? #BetterSoftwareBetterResearch

Why do (or should) journals want you to provide code? Which of these is the *most* important? Please retweet so we can get a few opinions.

ResFortnight: RT npch: sjh5000 and I wrote a piece for ResFortnight on why the focus on research software will have unintended consequences on openness if we don’t recognise sharing code is always good for research. #bettersoftwarebetterresearch #opensc

"Criticise software by all means, but bear in mind that its author is likely to be under-resourced and under-appreciated." Demonising researchers who release the code behind their models will discourage openness, say @npch and @sjh5000 researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-vie… @SoftwareSaved

Inspiring thread for academics who write code Neil's advice for us: 1. Publish your code, and publish it early 2. Champion training for researchers in your area 3. Reuse, don't reinvent Check out his links for support 👇 #BetterSoftwareBetterResearch

@khinsen coming up with some great ways that the software engineering community can help improve research software - it’s not just about reviewing code. #bettersoftwarebetterresearch

I am a big fan of this paper “Good Enough Practices for Scientific Computing” as the first step for researchers with no software engineering experience: journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/a… If you get them interested and invested, they’ll continue to improve #bettersoftwarebetterresearch
