4/6 Indonesia has incredible biodiversity, which is severely threatened by 🐘<-🔫+🌳<-🪚 +🌳<-🌴. We work with a great 🇮🇩 network to combine existing camera data from multiple time points with long-term socio-ecological data #DICECON21 #ConEffect
1/6 #Defaunation describes declines in species/abundance due to environmental and human pressures📉the scale of which is overwhelming - 477 species extinctions 🦤, ~45%⬇️in abundance. Biodiversity loss is not random: the bigger you are, the harder you fall #DICECON21 #ConEffect
(1/6) 🏝️Island biodiversity is⬇️at an unprecedented rate due to habitat loss, over-exploitation, invasive species & climate change☀️. These human-induced threats have altered ecosystem processes, causing numerous species to go extinct. #DICECON22 #ConEffect
5) Flagships(🐯🦏) performed poorly as surrogates for mammals! Instead, top surrogates were wide-ranging clouded leopard, dhole, pangolin, and sambar deer 🤩 Some species had⬆️correlation with specific metrics e.g. lowland deer best indicates PD #DICECON22 #ConEffect
4/6 #DICECON22 From 2005-2018, PAs in Kalimantan had on average 2.4 times less deforestation👏and 3.4 times greater alleviation of poverty👏compared with control areas outside PAs, however, overall wins for poverty did not mean wins for every dimension of poverty… #ConEffect
(2/6) As previous studies suggest species on islands are 1️⃣4️⃣% more likely to go extinct than their mainland counterparts, it is vital that we work on improving conservation efforts targeted at island species recovery through effective programme leadership. #DICECON22 #ConEffect
3/6 #DICECON22 Kalimantan comprises 34 terrestrial PAs covering ~9% of its total land area. To determine the effectiveness of this PA network, data on changes in forest cover and 6 poverty dimensions were compared for a matched sample of treatment and control villages #ConEffect
5/6 One year in and mid pandemic 😷 we’re working with 15 camera datasets spanning 20 years, with a further 34 datasets on the way! Exciting times ahead for @defaunation and our army of inspiring postgrad students @DICE_Kent & @univ_indonesia #DICECON21 #ConEffect
1) How do we identify species that best represent mammal biodiversity? Do #flagships perform better than others? #ConEffect Here's a sneak peek of our study with @noviarandayani, @marsyachr, Adhi N, Yosia G, Eka R, @wildbusiness, @NicolasJDeere, @mattstruebig! #DICECON22
(3/6) The conservation excellence model (CEM) allows for a detailed look at leadership, alongside 8 other criteria, to discuss ways in which programmes can improve their outputs, maximising their conservation effectiveness, saving species from extinction. #DICECON22 #ConEffect
(6/6) It has been great to be able to share my research with you all, as part of my MSc @UniKentSAC @UniKent. A massive thanks to everyone at involved with the project, especially project supervisor Dr. Simon Black. #DICECON22 #ConEffect
2/6 I'm focusing on the Global Biodiversity Framework Target 3 - which commits countries to ensure that at least ‼️30%‼️ of the terrestrial and marine realms are conserved by 2030. But how much of the land 🏝️and sea 🌊areas are currently conserved? #DICECON23 #ConEffect
Day 2 starts tomorrow at 9am with 4 more sessions of #LandSea2 #ConEffect #SpsMon2 and #HumWild #DICECON21
5/6 #DICECON22 Each poverty dimension showed improvements around PAs compared to further away except for environment (pollution & natural disasters). This could be linked to increased pressure around PAs from other industries accelerating environmental decline in PAs. #ConEffect
1/6 Hi everyone! I am a first-year Ph.D. student at @DICE_Kent and I will be telling you a little bit about my Ph.D. project today. One focus of my PhD is to explore complementary ways to track progress toward area-based #conservation targets. 🎯 #DICECON23 #ConEffect
4/6 To address this, Sykes et al. (2023) developed a method for estimating global conservation area coverage using a sampled approach underpinned by spatial prioritization algorithms. #DICECON23 #ConEffect
2/6 #DICECON22 Why #StatisticalMatching? To use an analogy, you can't compare🍎&🍊 from different locations to decide which area produces better fruit as🍎&🍊differ in other ways. Statistical matching ensures that you only compare🍎with🍎and🍊with🍊#ConEffect #teamcounterfactual
(4/6) Using #BlueIguanaConservation 🇰🇾 as a case study, the CEM was used to determine which areas of the project were successful. A comparison of several island case studies then allowed for targeted recommendations aimed at improving island conservation #DICECON22 #ConEffect

2/6 Well no *but* they mediate carbon flux: Grazing by🦌🦘can stimulate🌿growth (more CO2 absorbed). Too much grazing does the opposite! 🐺🦁 influence plant growth by keeping 🦌 in check. Meanwhile🐰 can ⬆️ soil carbon by digging. So much going on! #DICECON21 #ConEffect
Thank you @HumphreyCrick for chairing today and to all the presenters from #ConEffect! Now over to our final session for the day on #ConEngage with our chair @lililutra. Over to you Gail! #DICECON23
6/6 Hopefully, this will help us inform debates on target setting in the future with more data-driven input. Thank you to my supervisory panel (esp. @AnotherBobSmith), @unepwcmc & @ConservationOrg for their support, and @ARIES_DTP for funding. #DICECON23 #ConEffect
5 /6 In my Ph.D., I will use this approach to collect data on all conservation area types from a sample of countries. I’ll then produce updated estimates of how well the combined conservation area networks meet species representation targets. #DICECON23 #ConEffect

Hi #DICECON23 #ConEffect @HumphreyCrick! “There’s not enough money for conservation, so we need to make investing in conservation profitable for private finance” But… it’s more complicated than that. Summarising our new paper with @katiekedward et al. nature.com/articles/s4155… 1/6
Thank you to @hmk_oneill for chairing the #Natppl session and to all the presenters – it was a great session, despite the slight technical glitch! We will skip the scheduled break and move straight on to our next session #ConEffect (from 2.15 p.m.), with our chair @HumphreyCrick
And that concludes our awesome session on Nature and People! #Natppl #DICECON23 Many thanks to all our presenters @mic_lo1, @FfionJ199, @deen_rosa, @FayeWhiley, @AlexO46456 and @jessjessfisher via @lililutra for sharing your incredible research!
Apologies for running over into the tea break - but you've still got 5 mins before #ConEffect starts at 14:15 to make a quick cuppa! ☕️
Thank you for facilitating the #ConEffect conversation! I would love to chat more about it with you ☺️
That’s all for now from #ConEffect but we have more presentations coming up shortly after our 1 hour lunch break. Hope to see you all at 13:00 BST on the dot for more exciting presentations. Fantastic! Thankyou! @AnnetteLanjouw at #DICECON22
