5 /6 In my Ph.D., I will use this approach to collect data on all conservation area types from a sample of countries. I’ll then produce updated estimates of how well the combined conservation area networks meet species representation targets. #DICECON23 #ConEffect

4/6 To address this, Sykes et al. (2023) developed a method for estimating global conservation area coverage using a sampled approach underpinned by spatial prioritization algorithms. #DICECON23 #ConEffect

1/6 #Defaunation describes declines in species/abundance due to environmental and human pressures📉the scale of which is overwhelming - 477 species extinctions 🦤, ~45%⬇️in abundance. Biodiversity loss is not random: the bigger you are, the harder you fall #DICECON21 #ConEffect

4/6 Indonesia has incredible biodiversity, which is severely threatened by 🐘<-🔫+🌳<-🪚 +🌳<-🌴. We work with a great 🇮🇩 network to combine existing camera data from multiple time points with long-term socio-ecological data #DICECON21 #ConEffect

5/6 One year in and mid pandemic 😷 we’re working with 15 camera datasets spanning 20 years, with a further 34 datasets on the way! Exciting times ahead for @defaunation and our army of inspiring postgrad students @DICE_Kent & @univ_indonesia #DICECON21 #ConEffect

4/6 #DICECON22 From 2005-2018, PAs in Kalimantan had on average 2.4 times less deforestation👏and 3.4 times greater alleviation of poverty👏compared with control areas outside PAs, however, overall wins for poverty did not mean wins for every dimension of poverty… #ConEffect

5) Flagships(🐯🦏) performed poorly as surrogates for mammals! Instead, top surrogates were wide-ranging clouded leopard, dhole, pangolin, and sambar deer 🤩 Some species had⬆️correlation with specific metrics e.g. lowland deer best indicates PD #DICECON22 #ConEffect

(2/6) As previous studies suggest species on islands are 1️⃣4️⃣% more likely to go extinct than their mainland counterparts, it is vital that we work on improving conservation efforts targeted at island species recovery through effective programme leadership. #DICECON22 #ConEffect

3/6 #DICECON22 Kalimantan comprises 34 terrestrial PAs covering ~9% of its total land area. To determine the effectiveness of this PA network, data on changes in forest cover and 6 poverty dimensions were compared for a matched sample of treatment and control villages #ConEffect

(3/6) The conservation excellence model (CEM) allows for a detailed look at leadership, alongside 8 other criteria, to discuss ways in which programmes can improve their outputs, maximising their conservation effectiveness, saving species from extinction. #DICECON22 #ConEffect
