Long before the #DefenceCommission #Report many #commentators both #Expert #Layperson & #ArmchairGeneral have been calling out the #parlous #state of the #IrishDefenceForces All the will of the world, is useless without #adequate #manpower & #equipment #EquipOurServices

Yes. This is the responsibility of @FineGael @fiannafailparty @MichealMartinTD and @LeoVaradkar whose policies of non-investment in Defence have inevitably brought this about. Shame on them. Their first duty is to protect the people/State. They have failed miserably.

#defencecommission DON LAVERY In negotiations you start high and are prepared to drop low to achieve a result. @simoncoveney appears to have started low, Level 2- which the Commission did see as an interim step. After 100 years of deliberate neglect, we are playing catch-up.

And there's a lot more in the #DefenceCommission report. It's dense and covers such a wide breath of topics it needs careful reading. It's more that just #FundtheDF it's a requirement to change how we, the Irish, think about our @defenceforces

Things that interest me in the #DefenceCommission report. -New Command & Control structures with a Chief of Defence and a Joint Force Commander. -Military Intelligence legislation and clarification of roles.

#DefenceCommission. It appears the Government may opt for Level 2, €500m more on Defence. But there is little point in investing in primary radar if we cannot respond to incursions. Prioritise our gaps; pay and conditions; investment in SOF, Helis, AFVs, transport aircraft.

#DefenceCommission DON LAVERY Before the inevitable moaning about billions of euro on Defence, fighter jets, etc begins, just remember we are starting at the lowest base in Europe. These items should have been standard equipment for decades. Defence IS expensive.

#Defencecommission Under Level 3 option, The Army Ranger Wing - Ireland's Special Forces - would have their own dedicated combat helicopters in an effort at self sustainment. This would allow the force to insert and extract their own operators. There would also be a SOCOM.

#DefenceCommission Interesting to see the report recommends CSAR helicopters for overseas deployments. Up to now Ireland has not operated any Combat Search and Rescue helis. They could provide "agile and effective fire" in support of ground forces. + tactical transport helis.

#DefenceCommission No more reviews, commissions, inquiries, committees. Fund @defenceforces now - equip them to do their job. Requires firm political decisions. It is not rocket science. State security, existence possibly, is at stake. @MichealMartinTD @LeoVaradkar

3/ exists in the 2015 White Paper. Page 65 offers the possibility of a rapid-deployment capacity to support or reinforce oseas contingents. The #defencecommission offers an opportunity to parlay this into something more concrete and of benefit to the ARW (which the WP also
