On 16 January, 1847, Ludwig Döbler delivered his first public showing of stroboscopic moving pictures at the Josephstadt Theatre Vienna. #Dissolvingviews and #chromatropes were a large part of his performance. Below is Doblergasse (street) in Vienna named after Döbler.
Döbler’s #Phantaskop had 12 lenses each projecting its own sequenced images providing a depiction of modest motion. Two core lenses rotated by a crank directed limelight illumination at each of the 12 lenses successively. Austria honoured Döbler with a postage stamp.
The Royal Polytechnic Institution would present fabulous shows including spectacular #dissolvingviews. It closed in 1876 and its slides were auctioned off in 1882 for £900. As 'Magic Lanterns' were bought by the public, people could create lantern shows for themselves at home.
Complex & spectacular shows were presented at the Royal Polytechnic Institution (founded 1838). The screens at the Polytechnic were about 25 feet (8 metres) and included musicians, & sound FX techs. The #projectionists often used 4, 5 or even 6 large-format projectors.

Gaspar Schott, a Jesuit physicist from Germany, was born on February 5, 1608. Schott has always been in the shadow of his fellow Jesuit, Athanasius Kircher, but he would not have minded because he admired #Kircher and believed him to be his academic superior.
