Mark Davis: Full UI in OSes doesn't necessarily matter: people might be able to read and write fine in another language, but want to do text entry in their own language. Full UI is very hard to get support for, expensive ongoing effort. #FaceInterface
Mark Davis: Basic+ support in Unicode CLDR for 168 languages. Use in productivity applications: need Moderate to Modern support in CLDR. Ideally keyboard completion, spell check, grammar check, translation, voice. But have to do these things in order. #FaceInterface
Mark Davis: People need to be able to read and enter text. Characters --> fonts and keyboards. Broad fonts like Noto has been useful for access. Linebreak (base algorithm, lang. customization, dictionaries, hyphenation). #FaceInterface
Mark Davis: Options for picking different kinds of calendars on your phone, and all these things get translated. Adding characters every year, some new scripts (mostly historical/scholarly), new characters that people discover they need. #FaceInterface
Mark Davis, Helena Aytenfisu, Emiyare Cyril Ikwut-Ukwa (latter two undergrad SILICON interns) presenting on "Enabling languages on phones and computers". "Most people know about Unicode because of emoji." 🤣 CLDR / ICU are less well-known parts of Unicode. #FaceInterface
