That's my big encompassing issue with stuff like this. They don't want fantasy in their fantasy. They want real stuff in their fantasy. Someone with no imagination goes "what if there was pride in my DnD" rather than "what if we did something new and fresh and interesting"

This is what happens when books are sold like products instead of the art they are. The tropes-focused marketing demands the list is long enough to pull in a variety of readers. Plot is bound to suffer because it strengthens with elimination, with focus—not with more tropes.
