1/ Introducing the beta release of #FathomNet fathomnet.org, an #opensource #image database that can be used to train, test, and validate state-of-the-art #ArtificialIntelligence algorithms to understand our #ocean and its inhabitants.

7/ While #FathomNet’s primary goal is to aggregate #image #trainingdata for marine #life, the database also includes other concepts (e.g., #substrate type, #equipment, #trash) found in the #ocean.

6/ Unlike many other #ocean #image repositories, #FathomNet contains #annotation and #localization (bounding box) data that can be used to train #MachineLearning algorithms to automatically detect and classify underwater objects.

5/ The #FathomNet database is seeded with data from @mbari_news @insidenatgeo @oceanexplorer containing imagery from numerous underwater platforms deployed all over the world! You can also contribute your own data (more on that later)!

8/ #FathomNet isn’t just a database… it’s an ecosystem!! We have a website, #API, @YouTube channel, @Medium page, @GitHub repo, and @Slack space to encourage collaboration and contributions to the ecosystem! Let us know where we can do better.
