2/ Why do we need #FathomNet? Researchers use visual data to sample biological communities in the #ocean. But the collection of this visual data rapidly outpaces our ability to process it. There aren’t enough visual taxonomic experts on the planet!!
11/ There are so many people whose contributions made #FathomNet what it is today, and we are grateful for your efforts! Thank you!!
We doubled in size! Welcome new members of the lab as they work on #BigOceanBigData, #FathomNet #ITAG, and #larvacean #robotics projects @MBARI_News.
Want to automate the processing of your underwater visual data?? #FathomNet can help, and we have two upcoming events: online science seminar with @NOAA (Mar 8th) and a two-3hr-session workshop (Mar 31-Apr 1). Join us and share with your networks.
We’re finally out of beta and releasing #FathomNet 1.0! The new features will facilitate discussions about animal IDs, provide attribution, and notifications. (1/5)
7/ While #FathomNet’s primary goal is to aggregate #image #trainingdata for marine #life, the database also includes other concepts (e.g., #substrate type, #equipment, #trash) found in the #ocean.
1/ Introducing the beta release of #FathomNet fathomnet.org, an #opensource #image database that can be used to train, test, and validate state-of-the-art #ArtificialIntelligence algorithms to understand our #ocean and its inhabitants.
6/ Unlike many other #ocean #image repositories, #FathomNet contains #annotation and #localization (bounding box) data that can be used to train #MachineLearning algorithms to automatically detect and classify underwater objects.
10/ #FathomNet Co-Founder and lead of @MBARI_News' @BioinspirLab @KakaniKatija says, "We hope that #FathomNet will unleash the power of #AI in the #ocean, enabling the future of #conservation, #exploration, and #discovery.” 📹: @joostdaniels #MLTracking
Oh man - loved your talk too, well done @KakaniKatija #FathomNet sounds amazing - AI machine learning for identifying marine life, yes please! #NatGeoFest @InsideNatGeo Amazing!
5/ The #FathomNet database is seeded with data from @mbari_news @insidenatgeo @oceanexplorer containing imagery from numerous underwater platforms deployed all over the world! You can also contribute your own data (more on that later)!
8/ #FathomNet isn’t just a database… it’s an ecosystem!! We have a website, #API, @YouTube channel, @Medium page, @GitHub repo, and @Slack space to encourage collaboration and contributions to the ecosystem! Let us know where we can do better.
More details about the #FathomNet workshop can be found in this flyer. If you're a marine scientist, biologist, data scientist, taxonomist, and/or ocean enthusiast, we'd love to see you there! More at FathomNet.org.
