In 1860, #GreatMusgraveBridge was built by skilled masons. Its longevity is thanks to them. In 2023, stonework damaged during infill removal was repaired by @NationalHways using a 'cheap' restoration mortar that might last 30 years. Here, they couldn't even maintain the coursing.

We're back at @NationalHways' favourite bridge to meet @BBCNEandCumbria, reporting on the £476K spent making #GreatMusgraveBridge worse than it was in 2021. And then there's the 1,600 tonnes of infill, dumped on the trackbed just to the north. It's the story that keeps on giving.

When our campaign started, @NationalHways intended to infill or demolish 134 structures. But what's happened to them since? #GreatMusgraveBridge was earmarked for a heritage line extension. Infilled as an emergency, the concrete has since gone and it now has a capacity of 137t!

No news from @NationalHways: Two months after the completion of the infill removal project at #GreatMusgraveBridge, NH has still not fulfilled its commitment to reveal the cost of the works. £431K was allocated, based on the need to unnecessarily strengthen the structure.

So @NationalHways' new assessment indicates that #GreatMusgraveBridge now has a capacity that is 3.4x greater (~39t axle load) than is needed for the most potentially damaging HGV (11.5t axle load).

Some stonework in #GreatMusgraveBridge's arch has superficial damage that is not recorded on pre-infill inspection reports, suggesting that the defects were caused by @NationalHways' infill removal work. Infilling might be "fully reversible", but it comes with negative impacts.

So it's our view that on 24 June 2021, when @NationalHways' engineer told @EdenCouncil that #GreatMusgraveBridge was being "overloaded" and infilling was needed to "avert a collapse", it had a capacity considerably in excess of that needed for the most potentially damaging HGV.

These are the HRE works contracts issued by @NationalHways between April-November last year. No mention of #GreatMusgraveBridge which @NationalHways wrongly claimed would have to be strengthened when its infill was removed, for which £431K was allocated. #HiddenCosts #NoScrutiny

When our campaign started, @NationalHways intended to infill or demolish 134 structures. But what's happened to them since? #GreatMusgraveBridge was earmarked for a heritage line extension. Infilled as an emergency, the concrete has since gone and it now has a capacity of 137t!
