A beautiful day to be out translocating endangered Field Crickets! Although at first this one was a little reluctant to venture out into its new home... 🦗🌞♥️ @SussexWildlife @NatureBftB @RSPB_SouthEast @BBCSpringwatch #HelpTheHeaths NB: done under licence from @NaturalEngland
What does a healthy heath look like? In short...open. Scattered trees are a sign of a healthy heath but anything above 15% tree cover can result in a loss of heathland if not kept in check. 📍 Stedham Common #HelpTheHeaths #SouthDowns

Where would we be without sundew? Probably covered in midges at the height of summer. As a carnivorous species, it thrives best in infertile habitats with poor soil - like lowland heath! 📷 Nigel Symington #WildlifeWednesday #HelpTheHeaths
Why not plan a winter to seek out the Heathland Sculpture Trail? Located across seven heathland sites, these intricate pieces of art tell the story of the history, wildlife and people of the heathlands.⠀ ⠀ Find out more >> buff.ly/3ipNnye #SouthDowns #HelpTheHeaths
The Woodlark is a protected ground nesting bird which relies on heathland and starts nesting this time of year. If you walk on the heath, you can help by: -sticking to paths -keeping dogs out of vegetation 📷 Derek Middleton #HeathlandsReunited #woodlark #HelpTheHeaths
Spot the nest? 👀 Please remember to keep your dogs to the path on heathlands at this time of year. Nests on the ground are well camouflaged and your dog would never know if it accidentally trampled the eggs/chicks! 🐕🐣 #HelpTheHeaths #TakeTheLead @SussexOrnitholo @_BTO @sdnpa

Cladonia floerkeana, a common lichen on the heaths, loves the bare peaty soil exposed on scrapes. The topsoil is removed to allow new Heather growth, providing great basking spots for inverts and reptiles, as well as the ideal habitat for lichens! #HelpTheHeaths @BLSlichens

3 of 20 new scrapes created at @CowdrayEstate Heyshott common, thanks to funding from the Heathlands Reunited Project. These wet and dry scrapes help to rejuvenate Heather, provide bare ground for insects and reptiles, and help to hold water in the Winter 🐜🐍💧 #helptheheaths
