The excellent memorial to the guardsmen who closed the gates at #Hougoumont - on which the fate of the battle of #Waterloo turned according to #Wellington. Visited yesterday - 209 years after the event.
11am (or 1130) #OnThisDay French Artillery opened fire, signalling the start of the #BattleofWaterloo Fighting broke out to the west side of the field, towards #Hougoumont. It grew to a huge storm of fighting, though was only meant to be a distraction.
The ghostly apparition at #Hougoumont is probably Antoine Charpagne, the @1815Memorial cultural manager who lives at the farm & loves dressing up ⚔️
