There are many underrepresented groups in #STEM & within those groups are the 'invisible workers' going the extra mile to support their community. But until employers can see & support that commitment, their careers are at risk. cen.acs.org/careers/divers… #InvisibleWorkSTEM

Making invisible work in STEM more visible: People underrepresented in STEM fields take on a disproportionate amount of mentoring and other service commitments. It’s time to acknowledge it #InvisibleWorkSTEM buff.ly/2YEYn1h

#InvisibleWorkSTEM really became a challenge after tenure. Before tenure, I had less visibility and was protected from most service. But, after tenure there’s much more visibility to be asked to be on committees, review grants/papers, organize conferences, mentor students…(2/n)

I've also started to anticipate many of the #InvisibleWorkSTEM requests that I might get on the spot and think about my answer before hand. If I'm asked on the spot and didn't see it coming, I'm working to let go of the feeling that I need to give an answer immediately.(2/n)

#InvisibleWorkSTEM definitely applies to industry as well. It refers to the extra service load that is borne by people from underrepresented groups, but is not recognized towards career advancement.

We desperately need to change the reward structure in academia. We're researchers, but a main goal should be mentoring and promoting the success of the next generation. Much of #InvisibleWorkSTEM does this, and we should reward that by making it part of promotion, awards, salary.

One of the major drawbacks of #InvisibleWorkSTEM is the lack of formal recognition or career advancement tied to performing service duties. What are steps departments and institutions can take to solve this issue?

There are so many challenges to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and none of them have easy solutions. But, I think that #InvisibleWorkSTEM is somewhere that institutions could choose to make a huge difference with fairly straightforward policy changes.(2/2)

This. Women get more mentorship awards and men get more research awards. I personally wouldn't even mind this if the mentorship awards were not viewed as "lesser than." I choose to view them as "more than" - most research fades, but impact on people lasts. #InvisibleWorkSTEM

now we have specific awards for mentorship & community building, but rarely parity - mentorship recognition seems to go to women and research excellence to men #invisibleworkSTEM

I've started declining most committee requests and #InvisibleWorkSTEM that I'm not passionate about. I haven't felt that there has been a consequence or backlash, but I might just not know about it yet...

I worry most about how this will continue to suppress diversity, especially at the highest levels where the power resides. The cumulative effect of all of the time spent on #InvisibleWorkSTEM is huge. It's like trying to run in water when everyone else is running on land.

This is something that is a huge struggle. The response is often "well, everyone is busy and has too much service." As @l_wang_cen alluded to, we need to keep gathering and presenting the data on the disparate impact of #InvisibleWorkSTEM (1/2)

For those in the majority, please support your minority colleagues. Institutional change should not rest on the hands of the few #invisibleworkSTEM

What is the difference between a minority and non-minority faculty member you ask? I spent my Monday morning being emotionally affected by a racial comment in my course evals and trying to find a productive solution to address it instead of writing my group's paper. #minorityprof

A fantastic read in @cenmag from @Finetraces786 on how last year's Twitter Chat around #InvisibleWorkSTEM led to institutional change and a new #DEI Award at @Georgetown.

"I realized that there is no instruction manual for paradigm shifts. I had to chart my own course." In her guest editorial, @Finetraces786 discusses how the Twitter conversation around #InvisibleWorkSTEM led her to campaign for change. @GUChemistry. ow.ly/NZM750Ar7xs
