Checked out the #LabyrinthAshmolean exhibit today & the most lasting impression was a reminder of just HOW MUCH we’ve filled in the rather large gaps in history with what is often a stretch or obvs informed by the bias at the time. Interesting, just not in the way I expected!

There is much to learn of Minoan Crete & the role of women at #LabyrinthAshmolean. Women are prominent on frescoes/ objects in the Palace of Knossos. Some suggest Minoan Crete was a matriarchy; others that women’s importance was religious, as priestesses of a mother goddess. You?

Ariadne is arguably an unsung heroine in the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. In most versions of the myth, Ariadne gives Theseus a ball of thread, often said to be red, to help him retrace his steps & escape the Labyrinth. Learn more: ashmolean.org/shout-out-for-… #LabyrinthAshmolean
From ancient Crete, this little ceramic cup decorated with a crocus design features in #LabyrinthAshmolean. Crocuses were both a religious offering and a source of fabric dye. Depictions of them could also relate to the arrival of spring. ashmolean.org/article/spring…

This incredible ring dates back to 1450–1375 BCE. Bull-leaping is one of the most enduring images from the Aegean Bronze Age. It features on objects from the Palace of Knossos and could be linked with the passing down of the myth of the Minotaur. #LabyrinthAshmolean
